Science Day
Mar. 15th, 2008 10:39 pmThe girls were really looking forward to Science Day this year... Alistair is away for the weekend with the church youth group, so for once, the girls had the first choice of what to look at... They were unanimous that they did not want to go to any lectures - we possibly overdid the lectures last year, but there were lots of activities that they went to once in the first or second year of the science fair that I thought they might want to revisit now they are older - as it turned out, we didn't revisit anything.
On arriving and having a look at the programme, they chose the Biology activities, held in the Arts school. There was a bit of a queue (this year they were restricting the numbers going in at a time - which worked well - in the past, it has been a bit of a scrum on the stairs.) While we were waiting, we spotted one of the girls best friends and her father, and A&R went to say hello. They were heading for the same place, so we moved back in the queue to join them. After a 10 minute wait, we were let in, and proceeded to spend about two hours investigating genetics, pharmacology, DNA, healthy lifestyles and taking part in a psychology experiment, coming away with badges, pictures, origami and a jelly-baby and cocktail stick representation of a DNA helix!
After a snack lunch (including the edible bits of the helix!) we tried the next biology room - but they had run out of ingredients for their activities, so we wandered over to the Dr Who exhibit... unsurprisingly, the queue was round the block, but just as we had decided not to wait, an Oood and two "pig people" came out to meet the crowds in the queue and have photos taken. Pudsy bear also came out (maybe be a spoiler for the next series?), and having seen the "celebrities" the girls were quite happy to leave. A & R decided to visit the optics exhibits in the Guildhall, since their friend C had enjoyed it before we met her in the morning, so we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.
When we got there, R did a quiz on Wicken Fen and used an exercise cycle for about 30 seconds to generate power which she was told would be sufficient to power a lightbulb for 4 hours - Abi looked at forensic science and optical illusions. By now we were all getting tired, so we went to Waterstones to spend the Book day vouchers the girls got from school. We came away with four books - (one with teaching ideas for me), and headed for the bus, rather footsore, and regretting the decision to do science first and tesco second...
Apparently there is a quilt show at Chilford tomorrow, and I've just arranged to meet my mum there with the girls - its going to be a busy weekend!
